Olympic mystery: Who will light Rio cauldron?

4:21 AM |
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- The Latest on the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (all times local):

6:25 a.m.
As the Olympic torch makes its way through Rio de Janeiro, the big question is: Will Pele show up?
The former soccer star -- Brazil's most famous athlete -- said this week he was invited to take part in the opening ceremonies for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but business deals were stopping him from doing it.

Millions of television viewers from around the world are expected to watch the three-hour ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on Friday night, which culminates in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

American sculptor Anthony Howe told The Associated Press that his cauldron design was inspired by life in the tropics. There will be two cauldrons in Rio, one at the Maracana soccer stadium that is hosting the opening ceremony and another open to the public in downtown Rio.

Howe says the cauldron in central Rio will be lit by a runner after the opening ceremony ends.
___
6 a.m.
There's going to be no shortage of samba, culture or diversity in the opening ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics as Brazil proudly showcases its traditions and environmental wonders.
Millions of television viewers from around the world are expected to watch the three-hour ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on Friday night, which comes as the country is reeling from political and economic turmoil.

Organizers are making sure that global warming and the environment, especially the country's magnificent Amazon rainforest, are important parts of the ceremony.

In all, 4,800 performers and volunteers will be involved in the show at Rio's Maracana stadium. NBC will broadcast the opening ceremony on a one-hour tape delay because it wants the extravaganza to be shown completely in U.S. prime time.

Samba and pop music singers are expected to perform, including Grammy award winners Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Supermodel Gisele Bundchen will also be on hand to promote her native Brazil.

Bachelor In Paradise star Chad Johnson goes on drunken rampage and ‘poops’ pants

4:10 AM |

A CONTESTANT has been booted from a US dating show after just one episode following an ordeal that saw him drunkenly call a woman a “one-armed b*tch” before “pooping” his pants.
Chad Johnson was the villain on the most recent series of The Bachelorette US, and that reputation has been strengthened following his short stint on Bachelor In Paradise.

Just one episode into the series — which features former contestants of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette — the 28-year-old former marine managed to charm fellow contestant Lace and made out with her in the spa before alcohol led to some bickering.
\
Returning to the living quarters, Chad called Lace a b*tch before turning on everyone else.
“I’ll murder everyone here. I’ll kill your children and murder your family. Dolla, dolla bills, yo,” he slurred. He then turned on another contestant, Sarah Herron, who was born with one full arm and only the upper half of the other due to a medical condition.

“F*ck that one-armed b*tch,” he continued. “You suck that d*ck. Keeping sucking that d*ck. Keep sucking that fame.”

Chad eventually passed out by the pool. And, according to other contestants, he crapped himself.

“Not only did Chad lose his mind, but he lost all the contents in his body,” fellow contestant Vinnie recalled. “Apparently he pooped his pants.”

And it turns out even reality TV producers have their limits. An emergency meeting was called to eliminate The Chad immediately.

“You told everybody at this hotel last night to suck a d*ck,” host Chris Harrison said. “You had a chance to turn over a new leaf and you didn’t, and so on behalf of everybody, I’m sorry, I thought this could work out, it didn’t. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

By now, just from reading this article, you can probably assume Chad didn’t take the forced-elimination very well.

He flipped again.
“You don’t even watch this. You went to sleep last night with a mimosa and a robe on. F*ck you, dude. Go drink your mimosas,” Chad slurred at the host. “You think this is all fun and games? This is my life. You’re going to sit here and try and make me look like a b*tch? F*ck you, Chris Harrison. Come at me.”

Since being evicted, the guilt has set in about his “one-armed b*tch” comment and Chad has taken to Twitter to apologise to Sarah.

“I apologise. I said something I shouldn’t have said, and I did make a mistake. It sucks. What are you going to do?” he wrote.

We’re now kinda hoping the Australian version of The Bachelorette incorporates some drunken rants and pants-pooping later on in this current season.

Drake is set to go into a rap battle with Eminem? Here’s what fans think

4:09 AM |
Could the 6 God and Rap God be at war? That remains to be seen, but for now, Drake is making it known that he is ‘Not Afraid’ of an Eminem feud.

Earlier yesterday, Hot 97’s Ebro Darden opened up on his show about a private conversation he had with Drizzy about Joe Budden and Slim Shady.

‘We talked about Joe Budden,’ Darden said. ‘He was laughing. He was like, ‘I gave him a little look…That’s why Joe ain’t put out the DMs. He keeps threatening he’s gonna put out DMs, where I DM’ed him…The reason he ain’t put them out was because I DM’ed him and said, ‘I hope you get well in this tough time, aka you out here strung out on dope or something.’ So he ain’t put that out.‘

That’s when Eminem came into the conversation.

‘I told Drake,’ Darden added, ‘That the rumor was that Eminem was gonna gear up to come after him. He laughed. He was like, ‘That’s not gonna happen. He’d never do that and if he did, I’ve got something for him too.’ This was a private convo…That’s what he said.’

Here is what fans think of an Eminem and Drake beef;

Iyanya threatens Hit FM OAP

4:16 AM |
Thenetng has obtained an exclusive telephone recording where Nigerian singer, Iyanya threatened an On air personality of Hit FM, Calabar.

We exclusively gathered that the OAP known as Last Prophet had his radio show Otwetwe, on August 2, 2016 where he talked about Iyanya parting ways with his former partner and manager Ubi Franklin.

The OAP during his show said ‘he wondered if Iyanya was planning to return back to Calabar where he started from’.

Not long after the show, Iyanya put a call through to the OAP threatening him.

In Iyanya’s words, ‘I don’t depend on my strive (sic), but i depend on God to take me further, this is Iyanya speaking, brother let this be the first and the last time that you will make that kind of statement that you made about me on your show. I have never had any issue with you, don’t ever in your whole life mention my issue with Ubi on your show. I’ve had different people call me to make that report, the next time you do I’ll show you another side of me’.

Thenetng reached out to the OAP, Last Prophet who spoke to us saying, ‘I was shocked at Iyanya’s phone call. I’m a comedian and OAP, my show is a comedy show in pidgin English. All I did was make jokes from the situation, which is what anyone else would have done. I only feel bad because I’m sure he would not do that to any OAP in Lagos; he did it to me because he feels I’m in Calabar and he can just threaten me like that.

Iyanya who recently signed a management deal with TMC could not be immediately reached for comments at the time of this report. Since he parted ways with Ubi he has no known manager or contact details on his social media pages.

"A partnership with MTN and DKM to launch a platform of Visible hope for the creative industry where Creative contents will be found , housed , financed , nurtured , published , marketed , distributed and Sold with track-able Monitoring by Content owners without leaving their comfort zones. Supported by Bank of Industry" announced D'banj on his Instagram page.

The Cream Platform kicked off yesterday and D'banj claims that over 32,000 entries were registered on it.

In 2009 D'banj signed an endorsement deal with GLO and it was reported to be worth N70m. The following year D'banj reportedly asked for more money which ultimately led to the telco dumping him and signing Psquare for a contract worth over N100m.

3 years later D'banj bumped into Chief Mike Adenuga which led to the singer re-signing with the telco. His endorsement deal with GLO has now expired and the telecommunications outfit is not enthusiastic on extending D'banj's contract.

Last month D'banj made the headlines over his supposed marriage to a mystery woman later identified as Lineo Didi Kilgrow. The pop star has not confirmed or denied that he is married.

Henry Rollins Lost Respect for Robin Williams

5:15 AM |

0823_fish_robin_henry Robin Williams' suicide has inspired Henry Rollins to pen a 997-word missive for L.A. Weekly in which he highlights the selfishness of the act. Although he called Williams "a good man" and praised his performances for the USO, he said that he lost respect for Williams when he learned that the actor had killed himself, primarily citing the fact that Williams was a father. (Update: Rollins has apologized for his column in a long note posted to his website.)

"How in the hell could you possibly do that to your children?" Rollins wrote. "I don't care how well-adjusted your kid might be – choosing to kill yourself, rather than to be there for that child, is every shade of awful, traumatic and confusing. I think as soon as you have children, you waive your right to take your own life. No matter what mistakes you make in life, it should be your utmost goal not to traumatize your kids. So, you don't kill yourself."

Rollins did not discount Williams' despair in his post. "Depression is so personal and so unique to each of us that when you're in its teeth, you think you invented it," he wrote. "You can understand your own, but that's it."

But mostly, Rollins' essay served as a warning for people to consider the bigger picture of their actions. The former Black Flag and Rollins Band frontman explained that, to him, the act of suicide makes him reassess the person.

"When someone negates their existence, they cancel themselves out in my mind," he wrote. "I have many records, books and films featuring people who have taken their own lives, and I regard them all with a bit of distain [sic]. When someone commits this act, he or she is out of my analog world. I know they existed, yet they have nullified their existence because they willfully removed themselves from life. They were real but now they are not.

"I no longer take this person seriously," he continued. "I may be able to appreciate what he or she did artistically but it's impossible to feel bad for them. Their life wasn't cut short – it was purposely abandoned. It's hard to feel bad when the person did what they wanted to."

Rollins cited a statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that 40,000 people a year kill themselves. "In my opinion, that is 40,000 people who blew it," he wrote.

Ultimately, he summed up his position in two words: "Fuck suicide."

5 reasons ALS #IceBucketchallenge is a huge success..

4:18 AM |
Ice Bucket Challenge. Photo: Time
Some participants in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Photo: Time

At this point, it would be safe to assume every living human is familiar with the Ice Bucket challenge going by how fast it has grown to become the most popular activity on social media of late.

Since it debuted a few months ago, it has attracted the fancy of celebrities in the sports, music, movie and business circles all over the world. The most exciting fact about it however, is that while it entertained, it has achieved its purpose which was to raise awareness and money to treat the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Here are a few reasons we think the challenge was successful.

1. It combines fun with silliness: The concept affords celebrities and potential donors an opportunity to be silly and not get condemned by the public.

2. The Youth appeal: Although not explicitly stated, the idea feels like it was built for the youth and of course, nobody wants to be left out of that demography, hence the participation of older folks.

3. People’s vain nature: Even when they claim otherwise, human beings want to be credited for whatever good thing they have done, the challenge only gives them a reason to subtly brag about their donation to charity.

4. The cause: Every good cause would naturally elicit support from the public especially when it involves tackling a major health challenge that isn’t particular to any group, country or continent.

5. Social media factor: Whoever thought of the idea should be credited not just for it but also for the ingenuity to ride the challenge on the wings of social media which is one key factor it has become this popular.

Why foreign music is taking over at the expense of local music!

1:29 AM |
All you have to do is flip through local FM and TV stations to realise the penetration of these musical imports; to sample the sweetness of the African melody of Mafikizolo’s Khona, Yemi Alade’s Johnny or Diamond’s Number One.

Proof of the success enjoyed by these artistes was evident at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards where West African and South African artistes as well Tanzanian’s Diamond had multiple nominations and thrilled the continent with their performances. Kenya’s Sauti Sol were the only act to earn a nomination. Kenyan artistes and showbiz industry insiders are now crying foul over this apparent takeover and siege by their continental music counterparts whose music has  sold beyond their borders and taken over, not only the Kenyan, but African showbiz scene by storm and enjoyed some measure of success in the US and UK as artistes like P-Square, DBanj, Wizkid and Fuse ODG have secured collaborations with big-name international artistes.

The fact that the music scene has seemingly been ‘naija-cked’ has sparked a bitter debate within showbiz circles that at times has had artistes and record labels alike pointing an accusing finger at DJs and media outlets for propagating the takeover. More often than not, the response they receive is the unapologetic position that media in all its forms must celebrate success and not shy away from the fact that sometimes it may be more than just home-grown talent.

Without a doubt we are currently enjoying richness in our arts and especially in music and dance. Time and time again people from other African countries will comment that Kenyan talent can indeed not only rival some of the best in Africa but hit the very apex on the international stage.

Increasingly, it has become more apparent that instead of pointing a finger at the Nigerians, Tanzanians and South Africans, perhaps it is now time for us to evaluate their successes as a case study and ask the right questions to propel the Kenyan music scene to the next level.

The arts are part of a state’s creative capacity, spurring innovation and creating unique products and services. Creativity is part of any state’s competitive edge in the global marketplace where distinctive design and effective communications can spell the success or failure of a business or policy venture. Nigeria, Tanzania and South Africa are among states that have recognised this and have incorporated the arts into economic revitalisation, education, literacy, work force development, tourism, community sustainability and social service plans.

Recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta met with Akon while attending the US-Africa Summit, with the global star taking to social media to announce his invitation to Kenya from the president. One can only hope that fruits of this notable showbiz contacts will reverberate within Kenya’s growing music scene as did that of Tanzania’s president his Excellency Jakaya Kikwete rubbing shoulders with American showbiz heavyweights during a recent visit to the US. So far, Kikwete has demonstrated good use of these contacts by helping Tanzanian artistes link up with the international music heavyweights.

He invited Tanzanian mega star, Diamond Platinumz, to a dinner where he hosted Kevin Liles, the former president of Def Jam Recordings and executive vice president of The Island Def Jam Music Group, who now currently manages Trey Songz, Estelle and Big Sean.

The Tanzanian president invited E!’s Terence J, David Banner (rapper and producer) and Chaka Zulu to Tanzania’s film and art conference, which took place in July. At the conference Tanzania’s entertainment media players were inducted on skills they needed to grow the economic potential of their showbiz industry. President Kikwete is also said to be in talks to have Trey Songz come to Tanzania.

The Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of MTV Networks Africa, Alex Okosi, who has been instrumental in the growth of music and entertainment in the continent, helped persuade his bosses to launch a dedicated MTV channel for Africa and since MTV Base has said that Nigerian artistes and video directors now produce some of the best music videos in Africa.

“What we are trying to tell people is that they need to produce good music videos because that’s the best way to market yourself,” Okosi said.
A number of Kenyan artistes including Wyre and Redsan, among others, have been trying hard to make it on the global music scene. They have done collaborations with world class artistes but none has ever managed to get American top musicians or graduated from local celebrity to playing venues around the world like top Nigerian artistes do. Unanimously the artistes all agree on one thing; their marketing strategies need to be reviewed to make as much money and go to such high levels.

Shakira Hit Song Loca Broke Copyright Laws

5:33 AM |

Shakira
Shakira performed before the World Cup final in Brazil in July
A judge has ruled that one of Shakira's hit songs copied the work of a Dominican songwriter.

US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein said the Colombian pop star's 2010 Spanish-language single Loca infringed on Ramon 'Arias' Vasquez's song Loca Con Su Tiguere, which was released in the late 1990s.

Mr Hellerstein dismissed claims that Shakira's English version of the track also infringed, citing a lack of evidence during the hearing in Manhattan.

The single, which featured Dizzee Rascal, was not released as a single in the UK.

The judge said Shakira's single was based on a 2007 song by Dominican rapper Eduard Edwin 'Bello' Pou, better known as El Cata, which also copied Arias and was distributed by Sony.

The ruling is a victory for Mayimba Music, which holds the rights to Arias's work and which sued Sony Corp of America and several other Sony units in 2012.

The judge found only two of them liable, Sony/ATV Latin and Sony/ATV Discos, for distributing Shakira’s song.

Shakira reached the top of the Latin Billboard charts with Loca, reportedly selling more than five million copies of the single worldwide.

"There is no dispute that Shakira's version of the song was based on Bello's version," wrote the judge. "Accordingly, I find that, since Bello had copied Arias, whoever wrote Shakira's version of the song also indirectly copied Arias."

The next phase of the case will be to determine Mayimba's damages and a permanent injunction requested by the company against Sony.
