Having been displaced by several upcoming acts, rapper Ruggedman recently made another effort to bounce back.

That effort is personified by his new single Agidi in which the rapper, who shook the Nigerian music industry to its foundation with diss songs targeted at an umber of established stars, features Wande Coal.

But unlike the other songs that Ruggedman has released or even featured on in the past, the song is totally dominated by the Black Diamond Boss.

In the song, a 2-minute snippet which surfaced online on Friday, August 15, Wande Coal’s voice is easily recognisable in the song while Ruggedman’s voice is almost missing, unlike other songs he had dropped in the past like Opomulero, Ehen, Peace or War and others.

The rapper has however confirmed the leak is an unfinished version. Hopefully, he will make his voice heard on the final cut.

D'Banj to Heads for Harare

3:37 AM |
Dbanj at the Hennessy Club Tour
Lagos. — The "Oliver Twist" hitmaker will be the second artist from Nigeria after P Square who performed at the festival last year.

D'banj will share the stage with Zimbabwean acts among them the reggae/dancehall star Winky D, King Shaddy and Guspy Warrior.

Uganda's best Bebe Cool will be representing East Africa in a concert that has been dubbed "Battle of Africa."

D'banj was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria to a military officer who commanded an artillery regiment and a church dignitary mother who hailed from Shagamu in Ogun State. Due to his father's profession he moved several times within Nigeria and later moved to England.

D'banj was expected to follow his father's military career and was enrolled to the Nigerian Military School at age eleven. However, he resisted the system and dis-enrolled from the school after three years. While at the Military school he was a member of the elite drum corp of the Nigerian Army. From the Nigerian Military School he proceeded to another military owned institution Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Ibara, Abeokuta where he completed his secondary school education.

D'banj was introduced to the harmonica by his late older brother, Femi Oyebanjo, who died in a plane crash at age seventeen. With his love for music being greater than his parents' military aspirations, he struggled for his parents' approval; this can be best heard through an album track, All Da Way from his debut album.

As a tribute to his mentor Fela, D'banj brings Afro-beat to life and into the 21st century with breathless enthusiasm as well as a good dose of humour. His songs are based on his life, often hilarious but with a deeper meaning which documents the struggle of a young Nigerian trying to achieve his dreams. He performs in Yoruba, English and Pidgin English.

D'banj's debut album, "No Long Thing", was released in 2005, yielding several singles, with Tongolo as the lead single. This proved to be his breakthrough single and a hit. It also provided his "Koko Master" persona, with the term, koko, taking on a variety of meanings.

D'banj's debut success led to collaborations with other artists, this includes Dare Art-Alade's album track, "Escalade Part 2" and Ikechukwu's album. D'Banj's single koko was used by the PDP (ruling political party in Nigeria) as its campaign theme for the 2007 general elections.

D'banj's sophomore album "Rundown Funk U Up" which was released in 2006, yielded several singles including the club single, Tongolo (Remix) and the lead single, "Why Me?" This proved to be another hit. MTV Base.

D'banj is a founder of Koko Foundation for Youth and Peace Development. He is also Nigeria's first United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace. -- MTV Base/Wikipedia/The Herald Entertainment.

Big Blow on Davido (HKN Boss) as B Red, Sinarambo might leave the label soon

2:52 AM |

HKN; Davido, B Red, Sinarambo

Is it happenning????
ET has gathered, from multiple sources, that there is major crisis in the HKN Gang; the popular record label that attained overwhelming fame and success in 2012 may have been bitten by the recent ‘break up’ bug and might lose two of it’s popular acts B Red and Sinarambo.

After working together as a music crew for close to a decade, there are very strong indications that popstar Davido ‘Davido‘ Adeleke is parting ways with his pop singing cousins (his father’s elder brother’s sons) and label mates, Bayo ‘B Red‘ Adeleke and Sina ‘Sinarambo‘ Adeleke.
NET sources say tension has been building among the cousins for a while ‘but B Red and Sina have been playing it cool’. Apparently, the lesser known cousins now want out.

Sources tell us a big fight  allegedly ensued between Davido and cousins B Red and Sinarambo some weeks back in Atlanta – The cousins had accused Davido of not doing much for their careers as much as he should after they chose him as the label’s front line act. They also accused him of not giving them a chance to fully promote their new singles only to overshadow them at any given chance.

Flashback
Some years ago before Davido, B Red and Sinarambo relocated to Nigeria to fully pursue their music careers, the trio had been working in Altanta, US as a music crew called B International. Sinarambo was the frontline artiste with Davido only handling music production. B Red, a very talented drummer assisted with verses.

Then Davido began pursing a singing career seriously, broke out as a solo artiste and decided to return to Nigeria in 2010 to fully launch a music career. Starting off HKN Gang with his elder half-brother Adewale Adeleke aka Chairman HKN, they added (as only expected) B Red and Sinarambo to the team and approached M.I‘s manager Abuchi Ugwu to manage him.
Abuchi however turned down the offer (he is credited to mixing and mastering Davido’s monster hit song ‘Dami duro‘), Davido met up with a very enthusiastic Asa Asika (Asa in December 2012 parted ways with HKN) and well, the rest is history. The team planned to push Davido first, then Sinarambo and finally B Red.

Back To The Present
As we all know Davido’s music career skyrocketed with hit songs and a debut album ‘Omo Baba Olowo‘. He was immediately placed as an A-list artiste in Nigeria, topping charts, performing in different continents, winning awards, and bagging multi-million Naira endorsement deals.
Now that Davido has blown, it was Sinarambo and B red’s turn, but things didn’t seem to follow again‘, a source tells NET. ‘Every time Sina or B Red released a song or video, Davido would release his own music and somehow it overshadowed theirs’.

October 15, 2012 - Sinarambo releases his much anticipated first single-video ‘Ijo sina‘ feat Davido.
October 17, 2012 - Davido releases ‘Gbon gbon‘ off his ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ album.
February 8, 2013 - B Red releases first single ’Insane girl’ feat Davido.
February 25, 2013 - Davido releases controversial single ‘Gobe’.
Sources say the fight in Atlanta got physical after B Red and Sinarambo aggressively questioned Davido over the matter. ‘The fight damaged property in their ATL home, it started in the car and continued in the house‘.

Davido then traveled to Houston during the All star weekend to perform alongside Nas. He later traveled back to Nigeria and headed straight to Ghana for a performance.

Sources say, Sina and B Red were stuck in Atlanta (B Red has since returned while Sina is still in Atlanta). Davido’s father, we learn is now aware of the fight and has extricated the cousins. B Red we are told has also moved out of Davido’s house.

The ‘Insane girl’ singer who is Davido’s official hype man was missing at Davido’s side at two recent campus performances in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Ibadan (UI). He also didn’t attend Davido’s mum’s remembrance ceremony.

But Davido’s new manager Kamal (one of the guys who Dr SID says was present when he had that leaked conversation with Davido) says we shouldn’t fret. ‘There’s no problem in HKN, Sina is working with some people in ATL at the moment and B Red is cool with Davido’, Kamal told our reporter in a telephone conversation.

In related news, it is being reported that Davido has signed a upcoming pop singers Ghanaian act Deekay and Nigerian act Danagog. This could not be confirmed as Kamal could not be reached via telephone.

Dagrin’s Posthumous album ‘Invincible Bulletproof’

5:44 AM |
It’s two years and two months since the C.E.O  Dagrin passed away, but we haven’t been able to get his music out of our lives – from the DJ still spinning his hits in the club, to the hustler by the corner whistling ‘Ghetto Dreams‘, it’s going to take a long time; maybe never…

With two albums, he earned his spot as an icon, but many fans have been wondering if the rapper, like slain rap icons Notorious B.I.G and 2Pac, left behind any unreleased material.

Hopes were raised after long-time Hip-hop producer Frenzy released Dagrin’s first posthumous material ‘If I die‘. And with Spinlet taking over the project, which will see a release of Dagrin’s third and first posthumous album, titled ‘Invincible Bulletproof‘, things are looking up.

It would however be unfair to call the latest single ‘Haters‘ a good Dagrin song. With just an intro, The producer gathers a poorly selected five-man team made up of newbies Dammy Krane, Tipsy and struggling upcomers – Pellyhustle, Bigstreet and Oba Dice to feature on what is meant to launch an album campaign.

What makes matters worse is that Dagrin – who is meant to own the song, only drops a one-liner intro – very embarrassing.

D’banj congratulates Don Jazzy

3:03 PM |
Dbanj  & Don Jazzy
Music artiste, Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo popularly known as D'banj has congratulated his one-time business partner and friend Michael Collins Ajereh also called Don Jazzy on the launch of his new record label, Mavin Records.

D'banj, who reached out to Don Jazzy through the social media platform, Twitter, said; "Congrats to my brother and the best producer in Africa Don jazzy on the launch of his new Record Label, MAVIN RECORDS. Wish u all the best."

In response, music producer and owner of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy tweeted; "Thanks bro. God bless you."

The launch of Mavin Record label came on the heels of alleged underground fight going on between the duo seemingly caused by the signing of the G.O.O.D music deal with Kanye West.

On the other hand, an image which makes caricature of the Mavin crew, allegedly created by K-Switch, D'banj's brother on his Black Berry Messenger(BBM) as his Display Picture(DP), has been passed round the social media platforms.

The image showed the poster of Mavin Record crew being re-done with photo effects and the names changed from Mavin Records to 'Revenge' and the part that read Solar Plexus changed to 'The Avengers'. There were also names replacing those of the crew members underneath the poster, such as; Captain Mushin, Eagle, Hulk, Russian Spy and Thor.

This act according to many has been viewed as childish considering that D'banj and Don Jazzy appeared to be in talking terms as depicted on their Twitter statuses.

Fans Attack D’Banj For Shooting ‘Oliver Twist’ Video While Not Joining Nigerians In Protest

5:35 AM |
D'banj
I go vote for Goodluck Jona, na the right man we need, to make us succeed, oh ha, … Jona, Jonah my friend, he is good for Nigeria, Bobo to good o, o nice o, o ni luck o…’

The above is excerpt of lyrics of Dapo Oyebanjo’s, who is well known as D’Banj, campaign song for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) during the 2011 elections.

President Jonathan on January 1, 2012 announced the total removal of fuel subsidy by his government. This announcement has been greeted with wide public outcry and protests by Nigerians both in and outside the country. It has created tension in the polity since then.

At the first protest held in Lagos earlier this week, artistes like Banky W, Eldee, Seun Kuti, and other came out to protest the government’s stand on the matter. Hours later, D’Banj’s boss, Don Jazzy made his mind known by regretting voting for GEJ as the country’s President.

It was a big shock to the fans of the Kokomaster, as D’Banj is fondly called, when Mohits’ video director, Sesan tweeted, ‘D’Banj Oliver Twist video shoot tomorrow, it is going to be CRAZY.’

This infuriated a fan who quickly replied, ‘you(Sesan) and D’Banj are mad, despite the brouhaha in the country, [you are shooting a video].
At least, D’Banj na (is his) son. Another fan asked, ‘is D’Banj not a Nigerian’?

Speaking with NigeriaFilms.Com, a top artiste who prefers to be anonymous said, ‘I can’t speak for him, but he should know that this present issue is very delicate. I saw the way people reacted to your previous stories on this issue about Don Jazzy and Genevieve bearing their minds, the people are emotional about it. So, they expect us (the celebs) to be on their side.’

The support of GEJ at the election by D’Banj and other top Nigerian celebrities had been called to question by some Nigerians. Some believed it was just like the Abacha for president rally of the 90′s.

Tu Face, D’banj, Asa, others enliven Calabar Carnival

1:02 PM |

Asa
This is the best place to be at this time. If you are not experiencing Calabar this Christmas season, then you are not experiencing anything at all. So I would advise those who are outside the city to take some time out and visit Calabar this period. There’s just everything. Peace, hospitality and an atmosphere filled with fun and excitement. I can’t wait for the carnival. Everybody just has to be here. As they say, the taste of the pudding is in the eating.”

For 32 days, Calabar, the Cross River State capital will witness exciting cultural events and colourful activities that usually attract millions of people all over the world. Since inception, this festival, which has become one of the biggest tourism and leisure attractions in West Africa, has grown tremendously in popularity and scope.

Over the past years, the Cross River State government has used this carnival to drive its tourism sector and provide exposure for its citizens, as well as develop its vast tourism sites and infrastructure such as the Obudu Ranch Resort, the Tinapa Business Resort, Marina Resort.

The festival commenced with a tree-lighting ceremony on November 30 at the Millennium Park, Calabar and will end with a thanksgiving ceremony on January 1 of the succeeding year.

Usually, musical concerts that feature renowned national and international artistes are used to make the carnival very attractive. People like the late Lucky Dube, Joe, Alpha Blondy, Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi, Akon, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Chevelle Franklyn, Fat Joe, NeYo, Asa, D’banj had at one time or the other graced the event with their rhythms and lyrics.

Other attractions of the festival include awareness campaign and seminars on contemporary issues of global concern, children’s Christmas camp, theatre performances, vocational training for youths, fashion and food fair, a weekend at the Obudu Mountain Resort to celebrate Africa, and so many other side attractions. Of course there is usually a two-day carnival to spice up the season.

Despite the fun and relaxed atmosphere around the carnival, a great degree of thought, creativity and discipline goes into the interpretation of the carnival theme under a strict adjudication process. The result is pure magic – an outpouring of colour, sound and spectacle, unmatched by anything else on the continent.

Calabar Carnival takes place on December 26 and 27 each year, and is the highlight of the 32-day festival which runs from  November 30 to January 1. The carnival is the largest cultural festival in Africa, with 50,000 costumed revelers, 2 million spectators and an audience of over 50 million television viewers on NTA Network, NTA International, AIT, CRBC and Continental TV (Africa Magic, Channel 0 and MTV Base).

The carnival features 5 major competing bands and many others.

The major bands comprise of approximately 10,000 revelers each, including up to five kings and queens wearing large scale costumes that interpret the annual theme and set the tone for the other outfits.

Sections of these costumed revelers create a riot of colour and sparkle, accompanied by live music, DJs, well-decorated floats and steel bands. The carnival parade terminates at the U. J. Esuene Stadium which is the final adjudication and end point of the competition for the ‘Band of the Year’ in various categories. This competition attracts an additional 15,000 seated spectators and 10,000 others in and around the stadium, as well as 50 million TV viewers.

Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State unveiled the theme for the year: “Endless Possibilities” during a ceremony tagged, “A Glimpse of Destination, Cross River.” He described as “tedious and tasking, the process of finding a suitable theme for the carnival because it is more than dancing and costuming as the latest does not reflect the previous ones.”

Each of the five carnival bands are guided by the theme and expected to work hard to interpret them into dance, float and costume as they affect the people and the future. This year’s festival is well-packaged and better than the previous editions as it is driven by the visions shown a few years ago.

The Calabar Festival was initiated by the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Donald Duke.  Unveiling the ceremony was only a tip of the iceberg as more await those that intend to visit Cross River State this December.

All things being equal, business booms as the Calabar festival village begins. For revelers and fun seekers in the country, there can be no better place to be in this yuletide season than the Cross River State capital, especially with the opening of the festival village at the cultural centre complex. The festival village, strategically located at the middle of town at the moment, is the hub of economic activities and revelry and the perfect place to relax, socialise and have a good time.

However, it is not all about song and dance, the organisers of this landmark event said. “It is a festival that showcases the best of music, culture and talent. The festival is Cross River State’s tourism niche,” says Nzan Ogbe, special adviser to the state governor on Events Management.

Youths in particular stand to benefit from the festival as there are programmes aimed at training interested youths in various aspects of events production, management and entertainment. According to him, the festival committee worked round the clock to ensure that visitors to the serene city of Calabar during this period go away with a full sense of satisfaction.

New activities have been introduced, such as the Calabar Water Carnival—a boat regatta that would showcase the state’s rich culture on water, a food fair, which will also bring to the fore the state’s cuisine, the governor’s masked ball, a unique charity event and a host of other fascinating programmes.

“The festival is a compendium of activities with diverse scope and content, which we try to improve on every year,” Ogbe concluded, adding, “With new initiatives introduced this year and a strong committee, I can say we are going places and reaching for the higher height.”

However, due to reports of persistent stealing of handbags, snatching of GSM Phones, raping of innocent women and other atrocities perpetrated during Christmas festivals in the state, the Cross River State government has reeled out rules for Calabar Festival.

Government had warned spectators and participants at the festival not to attend the various ceremonies with their handbags or any other bag, noting that the safety and comfort of participants were paramount to the government.

The statement made available to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND said, “Spectators are advised not to come with handbags or any other bag to the venue of the festival events. Your safety and comfort is our topmost concern. Enjoy the Calabar Festival peacefully. The statement added, “The general public is hereby advised to note that the Calabar Festival stadium entrance, through the Naval Base, is strictly for holders of paid tickets.”

Other spectators to grace the event at the stadium who are not paying are advised to use the entrances through the Murtala Muhammed highway as well as the IBB Way, with their destinations clearly marked on them.

Interestingly, Governor Liyel Imoke expressed happiness over the number of private sponsors the festival has attracted, including Nigeria’s top brands, First Bank, Guinness and Dangote Group.

On the security of tourists in the face of the current situation in the country, the governor said he would not take anything for granted as effort is being intensified to revamp the Emergency Response Centre and reposition it for quicker response while 20 independent special security squad is to be strategically located at various points in the state to check any breach of peace.

Answering questions on why the festival is allowed into the night, he said  the initiative was deliberate because that is the right period for the  sponsors to get value for their investment as many people would be glued to their television sets.
