At this point, it would be safe to assume every living human is familiar with the Ice Bucket challenge going by how fast it has grown to become the most popular activity on social media of late.
Since it debuted a few months ago, it has attracted the fancy of celebrities in the sports, music, movie and business circles all over the world. The most exciting fact about it however, is that while it entertained, it has achieved its purpose which was to raise awareness and money to treat the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Here are a few reasons we think the challenge was successful.
1. It combines fun with silliness: The concept affords celebrities and potential donors an opportunity to be silly and not get condemned by the public.
2. The Youth appeal: Although not explicitly stated, the idea feels like it was built for the youth and of course, nobody wants to be left out of that demography, hence the participation of older folks.
3. People’s vain nature: Even when they claim otherwise, human beings want to be credited for whatever good thing they have done, the challenge only gives them a reason to subtly brag about their donation to charity.
4. The cause: Every good cause would naturally elicit support from the public especially when it involves tackling a major health challenge that isn’t particular to any group, country or continent.
5. Social media factor: Whoever thought of the idea should be credited not just for it but also for the ingenuity to ride the challenge on the wings of social media which is one key factor it has become this popular.
